Students in 4th grade at Seagrove Elementary School have been learning all about decimals. Students must be able to write numbers in decimal form, compare decimals, and understand the relationship between tenths and hundredths. The fourth grade teachers wanted their learning to be rigorous and relevant to real world situations. They finished up their decimal unit with a trip to The Decimal Diner. Students were seated in a restaurant setting while they rotated through different stations. Students used menus to place an order or take a classmate’s order. They practiced rounding, comparing, adding, and subtracting decimals. They learned how to stay within a budget and count back change. While no actual food was served at this diner, students enjoyed their visit to The Decimal Diner.
